The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), developed and unanimously endorsed by the Human Rights Council in June, 2011,  provide a roadmap for businesses to consider and address human rights issues, providing the first global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse impacts on human rights linked to business activity. This built on their landmark work defining human rights, outlined in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and considered the following:

  • States’ existing obligations to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights and fundamental freedoms;
  • The role of business enterprises as specialized organs of society performing specialized functions, required to comply with all applicable laws and to respect human rights;
  • The need for rights and obligations to be matched to appropriate and effective remedies when breached.

How have the guidelines helped? What actions have been taken in response, and how do they help foster the consideration of human rights, locally and globally? What are some models and practices that can inspire other businesses to incorporate human rights into their agendas, moving forward? How do firms and states move beyond mere state mandated regulations and compliance to ensure that the spirit of human rights protections becomes part of the corporate DNA? The conference seeks to reflect on, discuss, and debate these questions.
